Two cardiotocography machines were recently donated to the Maternity Ward of the Badulla General Hospital by the members of the Subian family. The existing four machines could not meet the demands of the hospital and this was communicated to the donors by Ministry of Health Additional Secretary (Public Health Services) Dr. Lakshmi Somatunge. The family of P. B.M. Subian, therefore, took the responsibility of donating two more machines.
The official handing over of the machine was done in the presence of Additional Secretary (Public Health Services) Dr. Lakshmi Somatunge, Director Dr. Upul Karunarathne, Badulla Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Ranjith Amarakon, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Consultants Dr. R.M.A.K. Rathnayaka and Dr. Suminda Premarathna. The cardiotocography machine is used to record foetal heartbeat and the uterine contradictions during pregnancy, and is considered an essential equipment in all maternity wards.
The Subian family is no stranger to such charitable acts. They were also instrumental in donating a building to the Badulla General Hospital in 1987, which serves as the mortuary at present. One of Sri Lanka’s leading fashion retail chains, Fashion Bug, is also owned by the same family.
