Dr. Udayasri Kariyawasam the current Chairman of Janatha Estates Development Board (JEDB) has added another precious trophy to his hall of fame by successfully completing his DBA – Professional Doctorate at the University of Newcastle, Sydney, Australia. Dr. Kariyawasam submitted an outstanding dissertation and research on ‘A study of the possible impact of structural and operational issues on the performance of public enterprises in Sri Lanka’ which is a significant contribution to Sri Lanka’s understanding and policy development regarding public enterprises. He kept the first step of his journey of thousand miles at St. Thomas College, Matale. He was a promising student and did his Advance Level Examination exceptionally well and ranked top in the district. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka and the Master of Business (Accounting) from the RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. He is a Chartered Accountant, Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (FCA), Member of the Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA) Australia, Member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (CFE) in the USA, and a Fellow of the Society of Certified Management Accountants Sri Lanka (FCMA). He is also a Senior Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (SAT). His vast experience by holding the Chairman position in both public and private sector organisations such as Industrial Development Board (IDB), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Sri Lanka, Insurance Board of Sri Lanka (IBSL), Ceylon Electricity Board and Bank of Ceylon shows his crowning glory and this sort of expertise and flair has become the very omen for his doctoral research as well. His desire to do significant things was not only exhibited in his professional streak but also in this research he did several significant things. In fact this research itself is significant and unique because no previous research appears to have formally investigated the reasons underlying the performance issues of PEs in Sri Lanka and according to Dr. Kariyawasam, DBA supervisor Dr. Colin A. Sharp is so pleased to recommend his doctoral research as one of the best of the 20 PhDs and 9 DB as evidenced by his satisfactory examination results.
