Students win top prizes at the ACCA awards ceremony

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), which is the global body for professional accountants that offer business-relevant, first-choice qualifications to people of application, ability and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management, recently held their awards ceremony at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, to recognise and award students who have excelled in their exams in December 2010 and June 2011.



Speaking at the function the ACCA Sri Lanka Country Manager Aruni Rajakarier congratulated the prize winners and said: “As ACCA members, they will get the chance to work in diverse fields and varied roles.”

She stated that she “expected them to uphold the highest ethical standards in all their professional activities, which is one of the key pillars that the ACCA qualification is founded upon.”

She also pointed out that: “Choice ,not chance determines one’s destiny” and encouraged them “to make use of the many cost effective options  offered by ACCA for further studies that include Global MBA’s MSC’s in Finance and accounting membership of other professional bodies and other world renowned post graduate educational opportunities.”  

ACCA President Nisreen Rehmajee also addressed the gathering and stated: “Achieving the ACCA membership offers one a whole host of career opportunities” She went on to say that “with those opportunities comes responsibilities and that there is a high expectation on the members to uphold the values such as equality, opportunity, innovation, integrity and accountability that are the cornerstone of the ACCA qualification”.

Chief Guest at the function was Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers Sujeewa Mudalige, who along with Rehmanjee handed out the awards to the prize winners for the CAT December 2010 examinations. Mercury Institute Managing Director Jeevith Shakespear which holds the platinum status as an ACCA tuition provider handed over the awards for the prize winners Skills modules whilst National Lotteries Board CFO Harsha Banadra the handed over the awards to the prize winners December 2010 Professional Level.

The top affiliates of Sri Lanka were awarded by Amba Research Lanka (Private) Ltd CEO Dr. Kemal De Soysa.

The two students who were the proud recipients of this award were Mendis Agampodi Dasun Tharaka for December 2010 who presently works as an accountant at Hemas Holdings and Shavindra Samaratunga for June 2011, currently employed at Amba Research Lanka (Private) Ltd.      

ACCA’s globally relevant qualification has given many students an excellent start in core accountancy skills, where they have gained more specialist knowledge to build a successful career in finance.

ACCA has also used their expertise and experience to work with governments, regulators, professional bodies and employers to develop the global accountancy profession and support over 147,000 members and 424,000 students throughout their careers, providing services through a network of 83 offices and active centres.
