The eMERG International Women Achiever Award has been won by a Sri Lankan for the first time. Major Ramani Kangaraarachchi, Director Crown Security Service, was lauded as the ‘International Woman Achiever of the Year 2015’ under the SAARC and Arab countries category at a grand event held at Hotel Sheraton, Bangalore recently. Major Kangaraarachchi was felicitated with the award, which acknowledges her hard work and dedication that has let her carve a niche for herself in Sri Lankan society. Egypt and Pakistan also won awards under the International category. After 15 years of service in the Sri Lanka Army, Kangaraarachchi retired as a Major and started Crown Security Service as a family business. Kangaraarachchi was the founder President of the Ex-Army Women’s Association and served in the post for eight years while being a senior journalist for the Associated Newspapers Ceylon Ltd. In the backdrop of International Women’s Day being marked yesterday, it is important to note that challenges faced by women across cultures and countries are similar and this helps many to believe they too can reach similar positions despite gender struggles. Kangaraarachchi is one such strong woman and sets an example to women everywhere regarding what it takes to be successful and devotes her heart and soul to encourage more women to foray into improving their careers. Kangaraarachchi is also the founder of Viruliya Sevana, an ongoing self-employment project for retired women from the three armed forces which was launched in March 2014. eMERG is a not-for-profit network of women in the technology, business and services based in India. Few partner associations of this awards ceremony were the Government of Karnataka, WEConnect International, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) and Wadhwani Foundation. The award presentation was held in conjunction with International Women’s Day on 8 March.
