The Quiz team from Seylan Bank once again proved their superior quizzing skills with a grand performance to win the sector award for Banks and Financial Institutions at the sixth annual Wisdom Quiz competition conducted by the Management Club (TMC) on 24 September.
Being a team event with five members in each team, the competition was open to 04 sectors – Schools and Educational Institutions, Mercantile Sector and Teams of independent groups in addition to those from Banks and Financial Institutions.
The quiz comprised of five rounds of questions based on five subjects – Current Affairs, Sports, General Knowledge, Space and Astronomy and Arts/Literature and Entertainment – each round consisting of 10 questions.
Seylan Bank who emerged overall winners of the TMC Quiz in 2009 became the best in the banking category in 2006 as well as in 2008. The other bank teams that had won this sector award in the TMC quiz are PABC, Peoples Bank (joint winners in 2007) and Hatton National Bank in 2010
The winning team from Seylan Bank was led by Shanaka Perera and comprised of Brian Joseph, Nimesh Dissanayake Subani Amaraweera and Chandrika Vas Gunawardena.
Commercial Bank and HNB Sampath Bank, NDB and People’s Bank were the other bank teams that competed in this category at the TMC- ICTA Wisdom Quiz this year.
In the Mercantile category Amba Research A team emerged victorious edging out their B team in a tie breaker round having scored the same number of points after the first five rounds.
Amba Reseach had also been a past winner at this quiz having been the best Mercantile team at the TMC Wisdom Quiz in 2007 Dialog Axiata, who won this category award for three consecutive years up to 2010, and Interblocks, DHL Global, Akbar Brothers, Aitken Spence Cargo also competed in the same category.
Dharmaraja College Kandy and Royal College Colombo shared the top honours in the schools category while the overall winners of the quiz was, the team led by Vindana Ariyawansa.
This being the sixth consecutive year that TMC conducted the Wisdom Quiz, it was a tough battel fro top honours with 43 teams competing – the highest number of teams to have taken part in the TMC Quiz so far.
ICT Agency of Sri Lanka supported the event as the main sponsor with ACBT, ICBT Campus, Pan Audio, DSI, CMI Sri Lanka Branch and People’s Bank, Sunday Times and Education Mirror joining TMC as supporting partners
There were a number first-timers in the Wisdom quiz this year – St. Lawrence and Lyceum in the schools category and Akbar Brothers, Tech One Global, Techno Medics and Sri Lankan Airlines in the mercantile category and also a team calling themselves Smart Minds in the category for Independent groups
As had been the practice from the inaugural TMC Quiz in 2006, all contestants were presented with certificates of participation, while all schools teams were awarded book vouchers to the value of
Rs. 2500 with the courtesy CMI Sri Lanka branch.
The questions compiled for this competition by Ruwan Senanayake – Sri Lanka’s representative of the International Quizzing Association UK – also a founder member of TMC – have always been of a very high standard while generating much enthusiasm in the audience and the participants alike with visuals and video clips being a part of some questions in every round. That could be one main reason for the TMC quiz to be ranked by the quizzing enthusiasts as the ‘premier’ table quiz in Sri Lanka.
TMC has plans to continue with the WISDOM-ICTA Quiz every September, which is now one of the main features in their calendar of events.
