Ramya Weerakoon, a well-known business woman who received the ‘Best Woman Entrepreneur’ award for the first time in Sri Lanka, will be launching her autobiography, ‘Triumph Through Tragedy’ on 9 May at The Kingsbury amidst a gathering of distinguished dignitaries from the Government, business associates and well-wishers from various spheres of her life. Having reached yet another milestone in her illustrious life thus far, her biography is said to be eagerly anticipated by many, and a fitting event has been organised to celebrate its debut.
Weerakoon, the Chairman/Managing Director of Ramya Holdings Ltd, has had to ford numerous obstacles along the way, but her sense of perseverance and persistence enabled her to emerge stronger than ever, every single time. Hailing from a conventional background, the conditions were not ideal at the time for female entrepreneurs or visionaries for that matter. Also, her life was beset by tragedy quite early. She was widowed at a very young age; however, in the face of adversity, she chose to somehow achieve her goals and succeed in the process.
The book chronicles her difficult journey from a young widow to the successful entrepreneur that she is today. She is renowned for her business acumen and has operations dwelling within the realms of manufacture and export of apparel and horticultural products, as well as hospitality and retail businesses in the domestic market.
A number of reputed brand names form the core of her business setup: ‘The Plains’ (hospitality), ‘Lush’ (strawberry and related products), ‘Aditi’ (ladies wear and accessories) and ‘Amari’ (horticulture products).
Ramya Weerakoon has been recognised both in the local and international business environments, and has received several accolades in honour of her commitment to the core principles of entrepreneurship, and her wealth of knowledge and resounding success therein.
Furthermore, her invaluable contributions and the service rendered to Sri Lankan women and society have been recognised time and time again. As such, she has been bestowed the honour of chairing and heading many associations and chambers.
The biography also reviews in detail the manner in which Weerakoon has contributed tremendously towards the socio-economic development of the country. The biography is an apt tribute and an interesting expose of her story so far.
