PMISL announces National Project Management Excellence Awards

The Project Management Institute (PMI) is the leading global professional association for Project Management, with more than a million members and credential holders in 187 countries across the globe. PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is the most recognised certification for project managers. The PMP demonstrates that you have the experience, education and competency to lead and direct projects. Project Management Institute Sri Lanka Chapter (PMISL) is proud to announce the National Project Management Excellence (NPME) Awards 2013, for the first time in Sri Lanka. This grand venture is uniquely focused towards recognising and honouring the outstanding Sri Lankan management professionals of project management discipline. NPME 2013 was unveiled at a gala event held on 26 June 2013 at The Kingsbury, Colombo. As we all aware that our motherland recovered from 30-year long civil war thanks to our country leadership. Since then a large number of projects of various complexities and magnitudes are being executed more than ever in our recent history. It was noticed that some projects have met their objectives as planned and reluctantly note that some projects have failed and some are abandoned due to numerous reasons.

PMI as an organisation who are committed to share the knowledge of project management best practices compiled and encourage the project managers to inculcate the highly researched project management best practices in to their projects to successfully deliver the result. PMI Sri Lanka Chapter is planning to recognise and honour Sri Lankan project managers/project management teams and organisations who has made outstanding contribution(s) to the development of the country or a large community of the country or to any industry. It also intends to improve the practice of project management profession whilst demonstrating leadership and initiative of advance project management concepts, techniques, best practices, and theories. NPME 2013 will reward the best project managers, project management teams or PMOs for demonstrating the successfully achieving the results of the projects within specified time frame within the agreed budgets with the desired quality. PMI Sri Lanka Chapter has planned to award the project managers under the following categories:

Best National Project –Government Sector
Best National Project – Private Sector
Best National Project – Academia/research/training,
Best National Project – Not for Profit, and the overall Best Project of the Year

The Sri Lankan Chapter PMI (PMICSL) was established back in 2004 and achieved charter status in 2005 and recognised as the fastest growing chapter in the region. In 2010, the Chapter hosted SAARC Regional Project Management Conference in Colombo which was a great success from a young chapter. Following the resounding success of the SAARC Regional Project Management Conference 2010, the PMI Sri Lanka Chapter hosted the Regional Project Management Conference 2012 in April last year. The Information & Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka was the strategic partner and Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel was the Platinum sponsor. This event was regionally applauded and highly recognised by PMI Global and hailed as an impressive endeavour by an emerging chapter. This prestigious international event, which attracted many international experts, high profile business leaders and distinguished professionals from various industry verticals and the academia, was instrumental in establishing Sri Lankan footprint firmly on the PMI Global roadmap. Furthermore Sri Lanka was commended as a great venue for future global events. Next year PMI has planned to have a global PMI event in Sri Lanka. According to statistics and global surveys there are more than 20 million estimated practitioners of project management and yet trillions of dollars’ worth of projects is at risk due to shortage of trained practitioners. Therefore PMICSL is continuously engaged in promoting project management professionalism among the Sri Lankan project management community through activities such as professional development and capacity building programs, building strategic alliances, networking opportunities and project management consultancy services. The NPME 2013 Award Ceremony is scheduled to be held at The Kingsbury, Colombo on 1 November 2013. ICTA, which is the largest executers of national IT projects, has engaged in this venture as the National Partner and Sri Lanka Telecom PLC – Sri Lanka’s premier integrated telecommunication service provider – has joined as the Platinum Sponsor to this grand event of national significance.
