In a unique event, the progeny of a legal luminary took oaths as Attorneys-at-Law on the same day. Mariam Sa’adi Wadood (28 years) and Milhan Ikram Mohamed (23 years), the progeny of President’s Counsel Ikram Mohamed took oaths as third posterity lawyers in the genealogy of the family root.
They, having honed their skill and talent under the tutelage of their father, President’s Counsel Ikram Mohamed, took oaths on 12 July 2012 before a bench presided over by Chief Justice Dr. Shirani A. Bandaranayake.
The daughter Mariam is a past pupil of Bishop’s College, Colombo and holds an honours degree in law from the University of London.
Meanwhile, the son Milhan is a past pupil of Royal College, Colombo where he excelled in studies. He holds a first class honour degree in laws (LLB) from the University of London. He completed his Master s degree in law (LLM) with a first class from the University of Cambridge.
He is a past pupil of Jesus College, Cambridge from which he passed out ranking number one in order of merit and ranked number two in the University of Cambridge’s Master of Law Programme out of over a 150 students.
It is considered a unique achievement for a Sri Lankan to obtain a first class LLB from the University of London International Programme. It is also unique for a Sri Lankan to obtain a first class LLM from the University of Cambridge.
Mariam and Milhan, who are the children of President’s Counsel Ikram Mohamed and Zeena Ikram Mohamed, on paternal side, are the grandchildren of late proctor M.C.S. Mohamed and Shareek Mohamed of Negombo. On the maternal side, they are the grandchildren of A.L.M. Yoosuf (Attorney-at-Law) and Zuhaira Yoosuf.
Mariam apprenticed at the chambers of President’s Counsel Thisath Wijeyagunawardane while Milhan apprenticed at the chambers of Wijedasa Rajapakse who is the incumbent President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
