As students head into their final semester, a local business-etiquette expert has a few tips on finding a job before school ends.
Body language, clothing and even table manners can win or lose a job interview before you say a word, according to an expert in corporate manners.
“A good first impression goes a long way. I know it sounds like a cliché, but it really does,” said Praveeni Perera, CEO of Professional Edge Consulting, which offers courses to help professionals with business etiquette.
That job interview starts as soon as you arrive, she says, and she stresses good posture, (hips and shoulders lined up), a firm (but not bone-crushing) handshake, and even matching the pace of your interviewer as you walk with them from the lobby.
“These may sound like trivial things,” she said, “but it definitely influences the way you’re perceived by others.”
Perera also advises preparing, researching prospective employers, getting a LinkedIn account and — though social media are great tools — not forgetting to order some old-fashioned business cards. (Source: Metronews, Ottawa)
