The British High Commission and the British Council in Colombo today announced the launch of the Chevening Scholarship Scheme and the Chevening Cambridge Scholarship for the academic year, 2012/2013 in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. These scholarships will afford high potential students in Sri Lanka and the Maldives an opportunity to apply for a postgraduate course in the UK.

Speaking in a YouTube video published to announce the launch of both scholarships, British Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Robbie Bulloch, said, “Many former Chevening scholars have gone on to be leaders in their fields, and indeed, even leaders of their countries. We encourage all those interested to read the information on the websites and apply.” (This video is available at: http://www.youtube.com/user/ukforeignoffice#p/u/6/R3FD5VU5UTo

The applications will be open from Tuesday, 1 November, 2011 to Sunday, 15 January, 2012 and will be available online only. For more information on both scholarships and to access the application, visit: http://ukinsrilanka.fco.gov.uk/en/visiting-uk/studying-in-uk/our-scholarships/

The Chevening Scholarship Scheme is the UK’s most prestigious scholarship scheme for foreign students. Its aim is to enable current and future leaders, decision makers and opinion formers to study in the UK and make a positive contribution to their own countries upon their return. It is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and administered with the help of the British Council.

The Chevening Cambridge Scholarship for Sri Lanka and the Maldives is offered by the British High Commission Colombo and the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust.  The scholarship is tenable only at the University of Cambridge, but forms part of the wide span of Chevening scholarships worldwide. The award is targeted at students who meet the Chevening criteria of academic excellence, high motivation and potential leadership qualities, and who can fulfil the rigorous admission criteria of the University of Cambridge.

Both scholarship schemes are open to graduates in the early- to mid-stages of their professional or academic career in government, the private sector or with a non-governmental organisation.

The emphasis is on study at the postgraduate level. Applicants can consider study in any field relevant to one or more of the UK government’s strategic international priorities, which can be accessed at http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/what-we-do/our-priorities/

Particular priority will be given to applicants who will work to promote good governance or benefit socio-economic or environmental development in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Candidates should have some work or academic experience relating to their field of study; have applied to a UK higher education institution for the academic year 2012/2013 and have achieved an IELTS score of 7.0 or higher.
