Cinema is a very powerful medium and has the capacity to influence people. The power of this medium is evident from the influence it has had on the social fabric of this country. Indeed, the world, as we have had Ronald Reagan, a movie star holding the most powerful office in the world.
Every movie made is based on interaction between people, and what you take away from them goes beyond mere entertainment. Good films can serve to teach truths about the human condition, revealing how people think, how they act, and how they dream.
What could be more important to a successful manager leader team member than the greater understanding of people, their emotions and knowing what makes people tick?
Management schools often use films like the classic 12 Angry Men starring Henry Ford to explain objection handling, conflict resolution, group behaviour, and creative thinking. Other films that are often cited for lessons include Apollo 13, The Hunt for Red October, Glengarry Glen Ross, Remember the Titans, Wall Street, Hoosiers, Miracle, and Chariot of Fire, to name a few.
Mohan V. Raman has a B.Sc. in Physics from Loyola College, Chennai and an MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur, one of India’s premiere Management Schools specialising in Marketing and Human Relations. After a stint in the corporate sector, he entered the entertainment industry in 1991.
Today, Raman is one of film and television’s most popular character actors. He has appeared in nearly 100 films and 5,500 TV serials and therefore acted in a wide range of roles, playing comedians to villains.
Drawing on his management education, his experience as a manager and entrepreneur, and his career in film and TV, he uses film as the medium for management training. He borrows from his knowledge of acting and his own performances, as well as those of famous actors from Hollywood, Bollywood and Kollywood (Tamil Cinema) to highlight various management concepts and behavioural patterns.
He utilises the themes and lessons that can be taken from films to train in communication skills, enhance personal effectiveness, inculcate team spirit, goal setting and improve leadership skills.
Theatre games and exercises are used by theatre practitioners to integrate the group as well as to help actors shed rigid personality patterns. Raman uses these theatre techniques to facilitate learning in the corporate environment.
They are powerful, experiential tools that provide deep transformational insights into how people think, function, feel and perceive themselves and others. Theatre games also serve to increase sensitivity and facilitate bonding, while having a lot of fun.
