The Sri Lanka Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Management Accountants (Australia) has recently appointed the Executive Council for the year 2011/12 with Murali Prakash being appointed as President and Dr. Nalaka Godahewa as the Honorary Chairman.
ICMA is a rapidly expanding the accounting body in Australia with an increasing membership in India, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka. ICMA has been present in Sri Lanka since 1999 with the Academy of Finance as its strategic education partner.
Prakash notes that the ICMA council for the year 2011 is looking to enhance the accounting body’s role as a conduit of knowledge and networking among professionals. “The ICMA (Australia) programme is very well accepted in Sri Lanka and each year we have 100 to 150 participants enrolling. ICMA is gaining in popularity because it offers a very unique proposition for non-finance professionals to gain financial acumen within a flexible study programme. As the ICMA council we are keen to further this role of ICMA by creating opportunities for professional development for both members and non-members through a series of events planned throughout the year.”
Kapila Dodamgoda, the Chief Executive Officer of the ICMA (Australia) Sri Lanka Branch highlights that ICMA members hail from a variety of disciplines with various backgrounds.
“What ICMA offers is an opportunity for every senior professional from whatever industry or educational background to move up the corporate ladder through the tool of finance. Today we have IT professionals, Marketers, Engineers, Bankers and even Lawyers following ICMA to give them that extra boost that added advantage that would make them stronger leaders in their company or a more industrious entrepreneur. ICMA sharpens their existing knowledge and skills, adds value to their experience and elevates their ability to succeed.”
Dr. Godahewa commenting on the value of ICMA observes that the programme gives a professional a competitive advantage in challenging work environments.
“Today’s professionals function in very challenging work spaces where expertise in a single field does not suffice to make sharp strategic decisions. ICMA provides the ideal platform to build multidisciplinary professionals and our Council would certainly add further value to the role of ICMA through focused programmes that would disseminate information and contribute to the professional knowledge discourse,” he concluded.
