Sri Lanka Gowri Rajan
In the backdrop of the world’s first Sri Lankan President K.R. Ravindran taking helm for the Rotary year 2015/16, Sri Lanka has been honoured once again with the first Sri Lankan lady Governor of Rotary Sri Lanka Gowri Rajan been appointed to the Rotary International membership committee for a two-year tenure 2015-2017.
Rajan commenting on the appointment mentioned, “Rotary is funded by generous donors who are committed to humanity and Sri Lanka in 2014/15 being ranked number 2 in the Per Capita Giving to the Rotary Foundation behind Hong Kong in the per capita donor criteria beating Venezuela placed third giants US, India and China which has some of the wealthiest people in the world is a big win for Sri Lanka on the peoples attitude to giving and concern for the less fortunate.”
“The performance on Rotary Sri Lanka on the per capita contribution criteria comes in the backdrop of Sri Lanka being ranked one of the most generous countries as per the World Giving Index 2014 which means Rotary mirrors the global ranking,” commented Rajan who is a recipient of ‘The Most Inspirational Woman Award’ in the converted Professional Woman in Management Awards. Rotarians serve the community by implementing educational and humanitarian projects. One of the major projects implemented worldwide by The Rotary Foundation is the Polio Eradication Project, which began in 1985. The deadly polio virus exists in only four countries, due to the untiring efforts of the Rotary movement, along with the support of UNICEF and WHO. The Rotary Foundation spent over $ 700 million to purchase oral polio vaccine for this project. Sri Lanka has been polio free since 1995 and last year Sri Lanka celebrated Polio Free with a ‘Night Cycle Ride’ sponsored by Smithkline Beecham in Sri Lanka to coincide with the visit of the Rotary Global President Garry Huang late last year that caught the eye of the general public at large.
