The number of students successfully reading for degrees at the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT) has gradually increased over the years.
At this year’s convocation held at the BMICH, 255 graduands were awarded degrees in computing, business information technology, business administration, technology management and in the newly-added degree – law by Staffordshire University Vice Chancellor Prof. Michael Gunn.
Last year, 238 students graduated in comparison to 196 graduates in 2010. 208 students graduated in 2009 while142 students graduated in 2008.
APIIT Sri Lanka CEO Athula Pitigala-Arachchi stated that this year they also marked a significant moment in APIIT’s history.
He stated: “We are graduating the first batch of law students. I would like to call our first graduating batch our pioneer law students. They had faith in us and joined our brand new law school in September 2009. They have blazed a trail for others to follow, set a benchmark for others to emulate. We are at the forefront of legal education in Sri Lanka.”
Out of the 255 graduands, 30 graduands received degrees in law, 106 graduands received degrees in business and 149 graduands received degrees in IT. There were 44 graduands who received First Class Honours and 94 graduands received 94 Second Class Honours First Division.
Speaking at the convocation, Gunn said, “At APIIT you not acquire knowledge, but you also learn to challenge that knowledge. Our partnership with APIIT Sri Lanka gives us the ability to work together well.”
APIIT Sri Lanka has worked in partnership with APIIT Malaysia and Staffordshire University since 1999. They launched as an IT training institute in 2000, included business degrees in 2003 and law in 2009.
APIIT held its first convocation in 2003 and since then they have grown rapidly with the expansion of APIIT.
