Chartered Architect Ranga Dayasena awarded Young Architect of the Year 2014 award

Chartered Architect Ranga Dayasena received the “Young Architect of the Year – 2014” award at the Architect 2014, the National Conference and Exhibition on Architecture conducted by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) in February. He also emerged as the winner of the ‘Design Award of Excellence’ under the category of Community Architecture.
Dayasena gained his primary and secondary education from Royal College, Colombo 07 after which he went onto graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science in Physical Sciences (1999) from the University of Colombo. A past student of City School of Architecture, Dayasena completed part one of the professional practice examination with a commendation from SLIA in 1999, going onto complete part two in year 2002 and qualifying as a Chartered Architect in 2004, with the completion of part three of the Charter qualification, SLIA III / Charter. He further went on to qualify as a Green Associate Professional by successfully completing the course of study and fulfilling the requirements of the accreditation board of the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka in November 2013.
His wealth of experience in the Architectural field include working as an Architectural Assistant to and at Late. Archt. Senavi De Silva and Archt. Lyn Edrisingha, late Archt Karthi Ganeshan and Dialog Axiata PLC where he gained much exposure to Interior Architecture and Project Management Practices. Throughout his career to‐date he has created and provided services to an array of building typologies such as Personalized Housing, Recreational Developments, Commercial Buildings, Corporate and Showroom Interiors, Religious Places, Monuments, Libraries, Educational Establishments, Broadcasting Studios, Exhibition Spaces and much more.
The Young Architect of the Year Award is presented by Sri Lanka Institute of Architects for an architect below 40 years of age, who has completed three different types of projects during the past six years with a notable contribution towards “Architectural Education” and “Institute Activities”. As such Dayasena entered three projects for the award scheme, namely ‘Sound of Silence’—a war memorial for fallen war heroes for Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) in Boyagage, Kurunegala, “The Salute”—a Recreational Development and a multifunctional hall, again for VIR in Kurunegala and “The Urban Haven”—a sustainable renovation, addition and adaptation to an existing Pre‐School in Maligawatte, Colombo.
Dayasena has a dynamic personality and has always opened up his spectrum to serve to a wider cross section of the society (from most established to most needy people) with special attention to practical designs with quality, cost, time and importantly with a humane touch. As such currently Dayasena is the Principal Architect of Axis Chartered Architects with 10 years of Post‐Charter Experience while acting in the capacity of a visiting lecturer at the City School of Architecture (CSA) and University of Moratuwa (UOM).
