Certification course on Quality Control Circles

Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity (SLAAQP) will commence a five-day certification course on Quality Control Circles (QCC) to help to enhance the knowledge of those who want to successfully implement this very effective quality tool in their organisations. This would be conducted on five Saturdays commencing from 19 November and the venue will be Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) in Borella. This program includes lectures, workshops, group and individual presentations.

Quality Control Circle (QCC) is a management concept which originated in Japan in 1960s which encouraged factory workers to form into small groups to identify, analyse and find root causes of defects and quality problems, and implement solutions. The workers were trained to use simple QCC tools such as Pareto chart and Cause and Effect Diagram, and also more advanced tools. QC circles started in many factories in Japan and began making significant strides in quality improvement. Japanese goods quickly changed its image from being ‘low quality’ to ‘world’s best’. The philosophy of the Japanese is not only to use the hands of the Japanese workers, but the potential of their brains as well. Quality Circles are very popular in many countries. Indian National Convention of QCC attracted astounding 7,000 participants from all over India and had stunning 1800 presentations of case studies which included 30 to 40 presentations each from the leading companies. That shows the interest and the passion have for this magical concept in these leading organisations.

SLAAQP is a Coordinating Committee Member of International Convention of Quality Control Circles (ICQCC). There are 13 member countries which included Japan, China, South Korea and India in this forum. SLAAQP hosted the ICQCC 2014 in Sri Lanka at BMICH with the participation of nearly 1000 foreign delegates from these member organisations. Some of the leading entities such as Toyota and Kubota from Japan, Samsung from Korea, TATA and Reliance from India presented papers on QCC.

An Annual National Convention on Quality and Productivity is also organised by SLAAQP. Gold awardees of this National Convention are eligible to take part in the International Convention along with the leading entities of these member countries which would be a very good exposure for the local participants. ICQCC 2017 will be held in Philippines. There are many other such programs are organised by SLAAQP including a 5S convention and the main objective of these are to facilitate the Sri Lankan industry to reach the highest international standard in quality and productivity and one day to win an international award such as Deming Award which is a pinnacle of the Quality Awards in the world.
