One of the largest healthcare system providers in Sweden, ‘Cambio Healthcare Systems’ has integrated over 100 graduates, from State Universities in the Research and Development Centre, set up in Sri Lanka, contributing significantly towards the local economy and job creation in the country.
The graduates have been selected from the Universities of Colombo, Moratuwa, Sri Jayawardenapura, Ruhuna, and Sabaragamuwa. The company currently has a pool of over 200 employed, in its Sri Lanka operation.
Cambio Sri Lanka Office Head Dharshana Jayawardena explained, “In our drive to achieve our vision which is ‘To create healthcare solutions that support exceptional care at every stage of a person’s life’ developing local talent was a critical success factor for the company. “Cambio has great confidence in the graduates from State Universities and their ability to drive forward an organisation of this calibre and the growth during the last seven years has been a testimony for this.”
He stated that Cambio thrived on diversity and its doors were open to anyone who had the adequate skills to be great software engineers, hence the Cambio population hails from both state universities and recognised private institutes in equal measure. Some of the success stories of the employees from State Universities include, Aruna Gunathileke who was one of the first five employees to join the organisation, from the University of Peradeniya, who now holds the position of Senior Quality Assurance Lead. He was also among the few who were selected to join the Ambassadorial program the company gives the chosen staff members are trained in Sweden for a period of two years.
Having joined Cambio in 2005 as a Quality Assurance Engineer, Gunatilake progressed from this position to Senior Quality Assurance Engineer within three years, and later rose up to Senior Quality Assurance Lead, the position he holds presently.
He currently manages the quality standards of the entire system of services offered at Cambio and ensures in eliminating all the risks that can occur in the system.
“What helped me come this far was the empowerment given by the company, that allowed us to make decisions, solve problems, be accountable for the work we undertake, increase our involvement and by letting us be innovative” Gunathileke said.
He explained that this in fact enabled him to be a leader who was self-directed across all levels of the business. An added bonus was also the many leadership trainings and seminars he attended.
Being a person who completed her Computer Science Special degree at the University of Colombo Rasika Senevirathne, was another employee who endorsed Gunatilake’s statements by saying that she got the opportunity of being selected to join Cambio as a Team Leader in 2011, as they had the intuition to recognise her potential and gave her the opportunity to deal with, lead and facilitate a large project team.
“It is a pleasure to note the manner in which the company has helped me cultivate, enhance and leverage my strengths that has in turn, lead me to contribute towards the task of carrying out many successful projects for the organisation.”
Another high flyer who was selected from a State University was Nethru Nanayakkara who currently works as an Architect.
He commented that the organisation was a strong motivator and mentor in the steady career progress he had from being initially a Team leader to his current position, which entails him to improve existing features in the core modules, work on new developments and improvements for clients that include most of the leading hospitals in Europe.
Citing his views on these successes, Jayawardena said “Cambio leadership philosophy has been to challenge employees and inculcate ownership within them. We have developed a strong HR organisation that continuously strives to provide people the ability and the opportunity to grow and take up more responsibility.”
He concluded by pointing out “Successful companies take a multi-pronged approach to nurture prospective leaders and also to develop a high-quality workforce.
“At Cambio, this is what we believe in, and this is what we work on and the contribution by State Universities to the Cambio pool of talent, has played a significant role in our success.”
