In a step to provide a novel way for mobile customers to brush up on their English language skills, Etisalat in conjunction with the British Council are introducing a new product, ‘Learn English with the British Council’.

The British Council, which has long been the most easily recognisable and well known face of English language education in Sri Lanka, is teaming up with Etisalat to provide novel English language tips on your mobile phone.

The British Council have always emphasised the importance of learning English because it is the global language. English is the language of affluence and opportunity, it is the language of mobility and in an increasingly technology driven world, a knowledge of English is of paramount importance because the majority of electronic communication takes place in English.

It’s with this in mind, and with the consideration that people today are busy and rarely stationary, that Etisalat are planning on launching this initiative on mobile phones. This way users can use it to boost their English language skills, regardless of where they are, and in a fun and unencumbered way.

Etisalat CEO Dumindra Ratnayaka elaborated on the motivations behind their partnership with the British Council: “The need for an understanding of the English language is ever increasing. Forces such as Globalisation and an increased dependence on technology mean that those without at least a basic knowledge of English are in danger of being left behind, and are limiting their opportunities for the future. The British Council has always been offering leading English language educational services, and we wanted to provide some of those services to our customers, through their mobile phones.”

The inventive design of the system is aimed to engage the students on the go. This service will be via SMS and customers will receive English Language usage tips and multiple choice questions. The answers to the questions will be revealed once the customer tries their hand at them, and, as the application rates the users’ overall performance, they will receive progress reports.

In this way the service will act like a basic electronic learning management system, interacting with the user to guide them by providing feedback, and helping them gage their growth over time. All the content for this service will be supplied by the British Council right to your phone through Zmessenger and customers who wish to register for the service can do so by typing ENG and SMSing it to 3333.

As one of the most powerful players in Sri Lanka’s telecommunications industry, Etisalat continues to discover new horizons and explore new possibilities in the domain.

Etisalat further offers Sri Lanka’s most cutting edge Internet solutions with the launch of its 3.75G technology. Offering a variety of value added services, sales offerings, Affinity packages and other service, they stand atop of the ladder in innovation, quality and customer service. Having passed an impressive 3.5 million subscribers in a record time since its launch, Etisalat remains dedicated to increasing its subscriber base and taking the company into greater heights.
