The Outward-Bound Trust of Sri Lanka (OBTSL) in a statement yesterday said it wishes to inform the general public and well-wishers that it has nothing to do with the recent fatality which occurred during a leadership adventure training program being conducted at the Wariyapola Wayamba Training Centre, on or about 17 February. The statement is reproduced below:
OBTSL adheres strictly to the safety protocols promulgated by Outward Bound International (OBI), which is evaluated every two years by OBI, to which we are affiliated, and also adheres to the Standards for Safety for Adventure Activities promulgated by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI), a statutory organisation which sets standards for activities of Sri Lankan organisations.
While conveying our deepest sympathy and condolences to the relatives, colleagues and fellow teachers and students of the unfortunate deceased, a lady principal of a National School from the Hambantota district, OBTSL advises and cautions the public that adventure activities are inherently risky and challenging, and therefore it is essential that the safety credentials of any service provider be thoroughly checked out before any such activities are undertaken. For example, OBTSL has an accredited separate trained Specialist Safety Auditor for every program we conduct. As a result, OBSTL has a 100% safety record in Sri Lanka from inception.
Outward Bound is a registered Trade Mark and no one else is authorised to use it. All our trainers are trained internationally by Outward Bound Singapore and Malaysia. Recently, two Malaysian Outward-Bound trainers visited us and conducted an advanced training program for Sri Lankan Outward Bound trainers.
