Sri Lankan Gowri Rajan has been picked by Rotary International to be on the ‘seven member elite Shaping Rotary Futures Committee’ to develop the strategy forward based out of Evanston, USA. Rotary that was created by Arch C. Klump ‘To do good in the world’, from a $ 26.50 is now a $ 1 billion entity with a nonvoting seat in the United Nations. Rotary today is a one of the largest and most prestigious international service organisations in the word.
Gowri Rajan, a past Rotaractor and second generation Rotarian, is the first female Rotary Governor to be elected to serve Rotary Sri Lanka and Maldives. During her tenure as Governor, Sri Lanka was placed number second in the world for highest per capita giving to the Rotary Foundation.
A major donor at level two and a benefactor, Gowri has attended every RI Convention since 2005. She served as a panellist at the Montreal convention in 2010 and as a Training Leader at IA in 2017. Gowri was recently awarded the Rotary’s highest accolade of Service Above Self Award.
She served in the RI Membership committee from 2015-17 and as ARRFC in 2016-17 for Zone 5. Currently she serves in the RI Young PDGs committee, RI Convention Promotion Committee and as ARPIC for Zone 5. Gowri has represented the RI President at District Conferences held in Taiwan, India and Australia.
By occupation, Gowri is the Group Executive Director/CMO of the Sun and Asoka Group of Companies, market leader in the safety matches industry in Sri Lanka which has today become a diversified conglomerate in the business of bottled drinking water, printing, hauliers and education.
Her other civic activities include serving in the committee of the USAID private sector partnership of Business Advisory group in Sri Lanka and as a council member of the Institute of Management Sri Lanka
In 2013 she was awarded the ‘Most Inspirational Woman of the Year’ by Women in Management – Sri Lanka. In 2017 the World Bank (IFC)/WIM recognised her as the Top 50 Professional Women in Sri Lanka. In 2018 she was recognised with the Management Excellence awards under the industry sector as the ‘Best Women in Management’ by the Chartered Institute of Management (CMI). Currently she is also a doctoral candidate in Business Administration.
