Curriculum development workshop on “Sustainability Management and Circular Economy”

The Department of Management studies of University of Vocational Technology (UoVT) recently organised a Curriculum Development Workshop on “Sustainability Management and Circular Economy” at the Galle Face Hotel Colombo.

The event was hosted by the Department of Management, UoVT under the purview of Techno-Economic-Societal Sustainable Development Training in Sri Lanka TESS Sri Lanka co-funded by European Council.

The University of South-Eastern Norway is the primary coordinator of this project. The University of Vocational Technology and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura will introduce new educational programs on Sustainability and Circular Economy through the grant.

The project’s aim is to introduce both undergraduate and postgraduate programs to the university curriculum in Sri Lanka to address the problems in waste collection, waste disposal and waste management and to move the society towards ‘circular economy’ with more emphasis on sustainability and improving living conditions.

In the first phase, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the University of Vocational Technology are taking necessary steps to introduce postgraduate and undergraduate programs in the field of “Sustainability Management and Circular Economy” with special emphasis on waste management.

The chief guest of the inaugural ceremony, University of South-Eastern Norway principal coordinator Professor Chamara Kuruppu, highlighted the importance of establishing a viable waste management system to address the current issues faced by Sri Lanka due to insufficient waste management practices which linked to life threatening issues and how the universities can contribute to address this national issue by taking a leading role.

UoVT Faculty of Industrial technology Dean Professor Chandana Jayalath stressed that it is high time to set up a rigid system to educate the young generation of the country to find creative solutions to the management related issues that are threatening the country. Adding her thoughts, UoVT Department of Management Studies Head N.L.B. Oshadie said that a B.Tech in Industrial Management Technology program is further developed as a special degree in Sustainability Management and Circular Economy in compliance with the work package.

Among the events of the workshop, group discussions and presentations were held to review and evaluate the newly developed study program in the area of waste and sustainability management by the UoVT and the USJP. The academic members of both universities, including the University of South-Eastern Norway attended the workshop.
