DMS Electronics (DMSE) was the gold sponsor at a recently concluded leadership training and workshop, organised by 361° Edge. Titled ‘Leading your team when the chips are down,’ the event was combined with cricket and the corporate world, with former Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene
delivering the keynote address. The event saw the participation of over 200 executives and managers from many of the nation’s leading organisations.
“On the outside, you don’t associate cricket with corporate success, but the fundamentals, whether it’s between the 11-members on the cricket team or the masses within an organisation are pretty similar,” 361° Edge Chief Visionary Officer Rukmal de Silva said. “And it’s near impossible to find someone who isn’t a cricket fan, so we knew this was a great match.” Speaking at the event, Jayawardene stressed on the importance of good team dynamics in winning a match and used stories from his tenure both as captain and a player to help best understand the keys to success.
During his presentation, Jayawardene emphasised on several key aspects for success, such as the importance of respecting differences, maintaining transparency, taking full ownership of the team, getting to know the players in their entirety, making courageous decisions when asked to, and focusing only on the things that are within one’s control. This was followed by an interactive Q&A session, that further explored leadership tips and tactics that could be applied in the business world. “When Jayawardene took over the captaincy for his second term, the team wasn’t doing great, and was getting over a pretty bad run, but he managed to rally the team and the country and pull through. We knew that his attitude and tactics that helped ignite the team could be translated into a corporate setting. So our job was to translate his experience and knowledge in a way that was relevant in a corporate setting,” de Silva added.
DMSE and 361° Edge have a long-working relationship, with the IT Company’s senior managers’ currently training the company’s innovative leadership development program. “Our personal experience with 361° Edge has been great we’re seeing great results since we implemented the DRIVE training program late last year, and when they approached us about this new venture we were extremely happy to support them,” DMS Electronics Managing Director Lal Chandranath said. The other sponsors of the event were Oxford Business School and Tripnicks.
