18 Sri Lankan students were awarded Chinese Government Scholarship this year. They will have their further study in China in the next few years. The awards ceremony was held at the Chinese Embassy on 2 August with the attendance of Ambassador Yi Xianliang, Mr. Madhawa Dewasurendra, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Higher Education and Highways and family members of the winners.
There is a tremendous enthusiasm among students to get an opportunity to study in China. The number of application received by the Ministry is increasing every year, Dewasurendra said.
Ambassador Yi encouraged the winners to be the friendship ambassador of the two countries. He said: “China and Sri Lanka are good neighbors. Our friendship which can be dated back to two thousand years ago is the solid foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation. China has provided significant assistance to Sri Lanka to support its social and economic development. Sri Lanka with a long history, great culture and high-quality people has a great future.”
He urged the winners to study hard in China and return back to Sri Lanka to contribute their expertise in helping build Sri Lanka. At the ceremony, Ambassador Yi made another donation of over Rs. 2 million for continuing the ‘Chinese Ambassador Scholarship’ program, aiming to financially support those excellent undergraduate students in universities across Sri Lanka.
