The Western and Southern Provincial Councils were dissolved by midnight paving the way for fresh rounds of elections for new administrations. The move follows the respective Governors Alavi Moulana  (Western Province) and Kumari Balasuriya (Southern Province) signing the Gazette notifications for the dissolution following requests from the Chief Ministers Prasanna Ranatunga and Shan Wijeyalal de Silva. Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya will announce the date of the elections for the two councils once he receives a request from President Mahinda Rajapaksa. There have been speculations that elections are likely to take place on 29 March.
