Another tri-set of provincial council polls is likely early next year after the Government announced yesterday that the elections for the Western Provincial Council will be held before the April New Year in 2014. If the Chief Ministers of the Provinces of Uva and Southern agree, elections to all three councils can be held on the same day, since those councils also lapse within a few months of the Western Provincial Council, Minister Susil Premajayantha told reporters yesterday. “According to the Provincial Councils Act, the Western Provincial Council must be established by 22 April. Its term lapses before the Sinhala New Year and a new council must be set up,” he said.
