The UNP delegation yesterday apologised to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay for recent statements made by ruling party politicians. “We apologised on behalf of our Parliament for the insults she had received at the hands of Minister Mervyn Silva who proposed marriage to her and even JHU politico Udaya Gammanpila, who called her husband a terrorist,” MP Ravi Karunanayake told Daily FT. He said that the UN Envoy was fully aware of the slurs that had been cast upon her by senior ruling party members. UNP officials said the comments had been demeaning and that it was wholly unsuitable for a Government to treat a visiting international diplomat to such remarks.
