The first ever expressway southern expressway is to be extended upto Matara under its second stage next year. And there are two more expressways to be opened in the year 2013. Officials said that the (Airport) Katunayaka- Colombo expressway and the Outer circular road from Kottawa to Katunayaka via Kaduwela which connects the southern highway with Katunayaka expressway will also opened next year.
The first expressway of Sri Lanka the Southern Expressway has earned around Rs. 950 million since its opening a year ago.
Deputy Ports and Highways Minister Nirmala Kotelawala has told parliament that the toll highway has earned a monthly income of around Rs. 83-85 million.
Around 283,000 vehicles traveled on the Southern Expressway each month since opening.
The 95-km four-lane highway from Kottawa to Galle constructed at a cost of around Rs.70 billion was opened on November 27, 2011. It is to be extended to Matara from Galle under the second phase.
