A Bloomberg report said that Kaspersky’s list of countries with the highest percentage of computer attacks has Sri Lanka ranked at number eight ahead of India and the Maldives.

The security company found that 51% of its users in Sri Lanka faced online assaults.

About 15% of Sri Lanka’s population, or an estimated 3.2 million people, were online last year, according to Internet World Stats.

Russia is ranked first on Kaspersky’s list of countries with the highest percentage of computer attacks. The security company found that 59% of its users there faced online assaults.

Bangladesh is worse than Sri Lanka at 7th place whilst India is placed 9th. Tajikistan was ranked 2nd, followed by Azerbaijan. Malaysia is ranked 14th, Maldives 16th and US is 19th.

The Bloomberg report said that when targeting consumers, cyber criminals are likely to go where there are fewer defenses. Developing markets provide such an opportunity, with millions of new internet users every year and fewer resources to devote to security.
