Former Deputy Mayor Azath Salley was admitted to the National Hospital last night due to a weak health condition.
Following his arrest on Thursday, Salley launched a fast while in detention.
His family said that he had refused to eat food given by his family or by the Police.
Salley was arrested on Thursday by officers of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Police Spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardena said that the politician was arrested over some complaints lodged with the CID.
Defence Ministry Spokesman Lakshman Hulugalle said that Salley was arrested for making comments that could incite hate among communities in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, responding to a questioned posed to Hulugalle at a press briefing yesterday, he said the Bodu Bala Sena was not promoting hatred among communities in Sri Lanka.
