Rs. 268 b expense bill for CEB in 2013

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has filed Rs. 268 billion as the estimated costs for the supply of electricity for the year 2013 with the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.

These estimated costs include Cost of Generation, Transmission, Distribution and other related costs for the supply of electricity. TheCommission will assess the validityof such cost estimatesfilled by the CEB.Further, the Commissionwill analyze whether, the prevailing electricity tariffs are not sufficient to recover the estimated expenditure of the CEB, or whether additional Government subsidies are required to cover such expenses.

The CEB has estimatedits expensesfor the year 2013 as Rs. 268 billion. The Commission is in the process of assessing these estimates. The Commission will study whether these estimates presented by the CEB arecompiled in line with the approved tariff methodology. The Commission will alsotake into account the applicability and accuracy of these estimated costs. Based on this analysis the Commission will revise the estimates of the CEB.

Thereafter, if a revision of tariff is required, the Commission will request the CEB to submit tariff proposals, based on these revised cost estimates.

The following steps will be followed, if the Commission decides to revise the present electricity tariff.

Public Consultation: An opportunity will be given to the public to express any comments on the estimated costs and proposed electricity tariffs.

Final Approval: Based on the comments received during the public consultation and policy directives from the Government, the proposed tariff will be approved with or without amendments by the Commission.

The Commission said it will take steps to inform the general public on the proceedings.
