Ranil says political agenda almost over; President to make special statement on 21 Nov.

The Government has expressed confidence that its political agenda is in place and that it will be able to initiate all the major political programs by 21 November 2015.

The date that marks one year since Maithripala Sirisena announced that he would be the common opposition candidate and the United National Party Working Committee backed his candidature, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.

Speaking at the Business Today awards Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said that those political commitments, including the passage of the 19th Amendment and getting the UN resolution in Geneva passed, has been done.

“There is still more work to be done including constitutional amendments, a new constitution and as the President announced today, we will be calling for the abolition of the executive presidency,” Wickremesinghe told the gathering of top businessmen and corporate representatives.

Refusing to give away any surprises, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said President Sirisena would make the announcement on 21 November, marking the conclusion of the major items on the Government’s political agenda. “Which leaves the next part, that is the economic agenda,” he added.
