The public will have the opportunity to view the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway on 22, 23 and 24 October prior to its grand opening on 27 October, Ports and Highways Project Minister Nirmala Kothalawala said. “Many events will be organised under the patronage of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa to entertain the people who are coming here on these days,” Minister Kothalawala said. “To celebrate the opening of the country’s second Expressway, we will conduct sporting events, such as, cricket, elephant races, volleyball, cycling and a marathon for people residing around the Expressway from morning to evening,” the Minster said. “A spectacular fireworks display will also take place at the end of each day.” Disabled war heroes and well-known local artistes will attend the events. Special art competitions dedicated to children will be conducted at most of the interchanges with valuable prizes on offer. Special transport facilities will be provided for Buddhist monks. Special Pirith Chanting will take place to invoke blessings along the Expressway on 24 October. Religious observations led by all religious leaders will take place in the evening on 25 October. As a special event, a motorcycle stunt rider will ride a motorcycle for 25 kilometres along the Expressway.
