Sri Lanka yesterday welcomed the support extended by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay to organise events to commemorate the rights of minorities and called for more funding for her office.
The Sri Lankan Delegation to the 22nd Session of the UNHRC told the Council that the proportion of the UN’s regular budget in overall funding of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights needed to be increased. “Sri Lanka is of the view that there is a need to increase un-earmarked contributions,” the delegation said.
The Sri Lankan Delegation also welcomed Pillay’s support for co-sponsoring a panel discussion on the promotion and protection of human rights through tolerance and reconciliation to commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day.
