The Government has bought over 75,000 MT paddy from farmers during the 2011 Yala season according to the Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando.
The Minister has informed the Cabinet that the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) so far has purchased 75,172 MT of paddy at a cost of Rs. 2.14 billion.
District secretaries have purchased another 13,564 MT of paddy using revolving funds of Rs. 389 million, he has informed.
The Government received permission from the cabinet to spend Rs. 2.175 billion to buy the Yala season paddy harvest from farmers across the island.
