The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to appoint a committee of high-ranking officials to recommend implementing a project to build 59,000 houses in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
This will be in addition to the 6,000 pre-fabricated houses which will be built in the Northern Province.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Management had recommended the building of 6,000 pre-fabricated houses at a cost of Rs. 1.5 million each.
A proposal by Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs D.M. Swaminathan to build these 6,000 houses and provide them to displaced families at their request and agreement was approved by Cabinet.
