oDoc wins Rs. 42 m grant from GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator Innovation Fund

Home-grown video medical consultation platformo Doc is gearing up for a rapid expansion in the scale of its domestic operations, having recently secured over Rs. 40 million in equity-free grant funding from the GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator Innovation Fund. 

The platform has facilitated more than 6,000 consultations since launch and signed up over 20 corporates, covering over 15,000 employees for unlimited GP and specialist consultations. oDoc intends to utilise these funds to expand access to its services across lower income categories through new direct to consumer offerings and via large employers including factory and estate operators.

Focused on bridging the gap between mobile operators and start-ups while enabling growth and innovation in mobile products and services, the GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator is a global program supported by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the Australian Government, the GSMA and its members.

oDoc Chief Medical Officer Dr. Janaka Wickramasinghe said: “Today is a day which represents the start of a new accelerated phase of growth for our platform. oDoc was first developed to directly tackle the challenge of expanding access to efficient, high-quality healthcare using the latest tools at our disposal. We now see similar services being rolled out across the globe from the UK and USA to India, Japan, Singapore and Rwanda.

“By remotely linking patients to doctors and healthcare providers through a reliable and easy-to-use mobile app, oDoc is working to revolutionise healthcare, both at home and around the world, in the years to come.

“We look forward to expanding the scale of our platform significantly over the coming months. Doing this through our subscription packages, which have seen over four times the utilisation of similar offerings in established markets like the US, means we are really moving to scale a proven product,” Dr. Wickramasinghe explained.

oDoc was selected together with 10 other start-ups from across Africa and Asia. In terms of impact, 1.8 million beneficiaries have been reached to date by the various projects funded by the GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator program, while the equivalent of £2.5 million of additional income has been unlocked collectively through direct revenue increases for citizens and local businesses, savings or productivity gains.
