Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has applied for nominations under the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) headed by President Maithripala Sirisena and willbe given the chance to contest under the party, Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne confirmed yesterday.
However, he emphasised the opportunity for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest as the prime ministerial candidate would not be available as he would not be able to attract the vote of minority communities, intellectuals and youth. Rajapaksa senior has not yet sought nominations from the SLFP.
Responding to allegations of Rajapaksa’s security detail being insufficient, Dr. Senaratne stressed the guards were provided to fit the retired lifestyle of a typical former president.
“If he (the former President) is so concerned about his security, then he should stay at home and not stand on a “pakispettiya” (a wooden box commonly used to transport vegetables) and hold meetings on the roadside. He should live the life of a retiree,” said the clearly-irritated Minister.
