Good governance activist Chandra Jayaratne yesterday described the appointment of Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy as the Central Bank Governor as a “silver lining amongst the dark clouds” that he said had engulfed Sri Lanka.
Jayaratne also viewed the appointment as an emerging positive signal for the assurance of good financial governance in Sri Lanka and a return of focus on macroeconomic and price stability-led administration by the Central Bank. According to Jayaratne, Dr. Coomaraswamy has the “requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes and above all unquestionable integrity and intellectual honesty to deal with the challenges of tomorrow.”
“I am sure under his capable and committed leadership we will not witness politically or personality cult led administration and decision-making seen over the recent past years,” said Jayaratne, who wished Coomaraswamy well.
He also expressed high expectations for Coomaraswamy as it was time to reform and restructure the Central Bank in order to return the professional institution its past prestige.
