UNP MP and Party Spokesman for Economic Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva yesterday raised a query as to whether Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal has any involvement in the mysterious Trust of Adam Wirretty, whose friendship with the British Defence Secretary has raised much media coverage.
According to the British press, beleaguered British Defence Secretary Liam Fox and his friend Adam Wirretty have had discussions with Cabraal on setting up what Dr. de Silva described as the “now infamous ‘Sri Lanka Development Trust’” that was to have invested in road building and other infrastructure projects using private investments. De Silva said Lord Bell, whose PR firm Bell Pottinger was paid millions by the Sri Lankan Government for public relations in the UK and elsewhere, has said the deal had been struck between Fox and Cabraal.
“Given that this so-called trust has not been registered anywhere and the secrecy around it, Cabraal, as a responsible public servant, should immediately come clean as to what he was doing with Mr Wirretty in setting up this trust, who the investors were, how much money was involved and what development work has been undertaken thus far,” UNP MP de Silva said in a statement.
