Cabinet this week gave the green light to proceed with long-awaited modernisation activities to improve the capacity of Jaya Container Terminal (JCT).
Accordingly approval was given to a proposal made by Ports and Shipping Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe to call for tenders for procurement of Container handling and civil works involved in Phase V of the project. The leading terminal of SLPA JCT has been limited in capacity as it is not able to anchor large vessels longer than 350 metres. The Ministry has been planning the improvements that were needed over the years, as the equipment in the terminal is also over 20 years old, which has had an impact on productivity of the terminal.
