The tender for section three of the Central Highway received two bids from Japanese construction companies, when bidding closed last afternoon.
The Fujita Corporation, which bid Rs. 147 billion, came in as the lower of the two with the Taisei Corporation bidding Rs. 159 billon, which amounts to a difference of Rs. 12 billion. The pre-negotiation tender values are higher than the engineer’s estimate of Rs. 126 billion but officials are confident of a better deal. The fact that there was a second bidder has considerably reduced the possibility of a higher cost. This was after Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe and Embassy of Japan stepped up their efforts to make the bid more competitive.
