United National Party yesterday has decided to nominate former Army Commander and Democratic Party Leader, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to Parliament to fill the vacancy created by the demise of Lands Minister M. K. A. D. S. Gunawardena.
The decision was taken at the party’s working committee meeting.
The leader of Democratic Party last week signed a collective agreement with UNP leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The agreement paves the way for Fonseka to be appointed as a Member of Parliament from the UNP national list to fill the vacancy left behind by the death of UNP’s national list MP and Minister M.K.D.S. Gunawardena last month.
Field Marshal Fonseka contested the 2015 general elections from Kurunegala district but failed to secure a seat.
