Former Prime Ministers Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and D. M. Jayaratne have been appointed senior political advisors to the President.
President Maithripala Sirisena made these appointments yesterday at the Presidential Secretariat, the President’s Office said in a statement.
Wickremanayake is currently a Member of Parliament and served as the Prime Minister from August 2000 to December 2001, during the rule of the People’s Alliance Government and again from November 2005 to April 2010 when the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Government was in power.
He was first elected to Parliament in 1960.
Jayaratne, a veteran politician with nearly three decades’ experience, served as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from April 2010 to January 2015. He was first elected to Parliament in 1970.
President Sirisena also appointed four Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) parliamentarians Deputy Ministers on Wednesday evening.
