The Finance Ministry is focusing its attention on amending the 150-year-old Sri Lanka Customs Ordinance.
The Sri Lanka Customs Ordinance was introduced in 1861 and 50 amendments have been made already since its inception.
The aim of the Government to amend the Customs Ordinance is to absorb modern industrial trends in the current global market and other relevant technologies in order to reap maximum benefits for the country.
This will enable Sri Lanka to update the prevailing import mechanism and minimise current trade irregularities.
The Government also anticipates obtaining the views of scholars, professionals, trade unionists and individuals who are interested in this regard. Steps have already commenced to collect suggestions from the parties who are already engaged in the sector.
