The Appeal Court yesterday issued notice on six people including Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, the Secretary to the Treasury, Deputy Secretary to the Treasury and Director General of Customs.
Several representatives of the Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers’ Association had moved to the Appeal Court challenging Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake’s order to remove the depreciation tax formula and to impose the brand new vehicle taxes when importing vehicles.
According to the media reports, the Finance Minister, Secretary to the Treasury, Deputy Secretary to the Treasury and the Director General of Customs have been named as respondents in the case.
Commenting on the case, lawyer Deekiriwewa told the media that several representatives of the Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers’ Association had challenged the Finance Minister’s directive while claiming that the particular gazette notification of 10 February had not received Cabinet approval. They also stated that the Finance Minister did not have the authority to make policy decisions.
