The Constitutional Council yesterday recommended Western Province Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Pujith Jayasundara’s name for the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing outgoing IGP N. K. Illangakoon.
The decision to refer DIG Jayasundara’s name to President Maithriapala Sirisena was made when the Constitutional Council convened under the patronage of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya in Parliament last afternoon to reach a consensus on the matter, following interviews the Council held with three hopefuls for the position including Senior DIGs S. M. Wickremesinghe and Chandana Wickremeratne.
In the event President Sirisena formally approves his appointment, Jayasundara will be the 34th IGP to serve the force. Meanwhile, the Government’s official news portal news.lk reported last evening that Jayasundara has been appointed as Acting IGP with immediate effect until 5 November.
The appointment has been made as Illangakoon had left for Uganda on an official visit, the site quoted the Police as saying.
