Cargills Food City opens in Kilinochchi

Cargills Food City, Sri Lanka’s leading supermarket chain, yesterday opened its 163rd outlet Kilinochchi, marking it the fourth in the north.

MP Namal Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest at the opening, giving official recognition for Cargills’ growing contribution to the former conflicted-affected region.

Cargills said the opening at Kilinochchi, the former stronghold of the LTTE, comes as part of its accelerated expansion drive, through which Cargills Food City aims to partner the development of regional Sri Lanka.

Over the past 12 months Cargills has invested over Rs. 200 million in the northern region with the opening of Cargills Food City outlets in Manipay, Kannathidi Road – Jaffna and Vavuniya.

Cargills (Ceylon) Chief Operating Officer Retail Sidath Kodikara, commenting on the opening of the Kilinochchi outlet, said: “Cargills is gratified by the response of the public of the north and the warm welcome we have received. This is simply the beginning of greater investment in the region.”

“Cargills has already trained 1,000 farmers from Jaffna and has commenced direct purchasing. Very recently we initiated the ‘Yal Uthpaththi’ programme together with the Central Bank to provide markets for palmyrah farmers from the region. The launch of this new outlet reiterates our commitment to partner the progress of our nation and its people. Over the last 12 months Cargills has invested over Rs. 200 million in the northern region. We look forward to working with the people of north towards building a stronger future for the community and the country,” Kodikara added.

The new Cargills Food City in Kilinochchi offers an ultra modern shopping experience for customers and is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Shoppers can expect the superior customer care that has come to be the hallmark of Cargills Food City. The new outlet features a range of 10,000 products, a pharmacy, fresh vegetables and fish, as well as a wide variety of high quality meats. The shopping experience is heightened further with ample parking facilities.

The latest outlet in Kilinochchi was declared open in the presence of a large gathering of dignitaries including Northern Province Governor Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Deputy Secretary and Commissioner for Governor for Mullativu and Kilinochchi T. Rasanayagama, Security Forces Commander – Kilinochchi Major General Nandana Udawatta and Deputy Inspector General of Police – Kilinochchi Neil Daluwatta.
