The Megapolis and Western Development Ministry has received Cabinet approval to spend $ 147 million from the International Development Agency to improve infrastructure in Kandy and Galle.
A portion of the funds will be used to rehabilitate and improve Dharmashoka Mawatha, the Katugastota-Madawala road and the Madawala- Digana road, according to the Cabinet paper submitted by the Ministry.
Approval was also given for a second Cabinet paper jointly submitted by the Megapolis Ministry and Disaster Management Ministry to rehabilitate canals and restore wetlands in the Kolonnawa area to prevent future floods.
As an additional step to assist flood-affected people, the Housing Ministry and the Disaster Management Ministry will plan a programme to reconstruct 500 houses completely destroyed by floods and renovate 4,000 houses that were partially damaged.
These houses covering all 22 districts affected by floods were identified by the Disaster Management Ministry. Special authority has also been given to provincial councils and local governments to rent equipment needed to clean garbage in the Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa area by the Cabinet. The garbage is expected to be cleared in one week.
