Cabinet approves guaranteed price for potatoes, onions and chillies

The cabinet yesterday approved a guaranteed price for potatoes, big onions and dried chillies under a Finance Ministry scheme to promote self-sufficiency.
Under the new measure the guaranteed price of 1 kilogram of potatoes, big onions and dried chillies will be Rs. 80, Rs. 60 and Rs. 350 respectively. However, the biggest increases have been reserved for seed potatoes and big onion seeds that have been increased to Rs. 160 and Rs. 12,000 respectively.
These measures will push the country towards 50% self-sufficiency by 2015 and result in a surplus of production 2020.
The surplus will be used for exports, the Cabinet paper added. Cabinet approval was in line with proposals made in the Budget.
