Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage has rejected the ruling party parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala’s nomination for the presidency of the country’s cricket governing body, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
He also said that other nominations has been rejected by the SLC as well. The other aspirants are incumbent Chairman Upali Dharmadasa and President of the Badureliya Cricket Association Sumith Perera.
Sumathipala’s rejection was after having considered the recommendations made by the committee that was appointed to probe the charges levelled against Thilanga Sumathipala.
The Sports Minister stated that the reason for this decision was since Thilanga Sumathipala had violated regulations under 15/1 of the sports act.
Three major cricket clubs have filed objections against Sumathipala’s nomination based on his involvement in betting, media and sports equipment businesses.
The elections of officials to Sri Lanka Cricket scheduled for March 30, was postponed to April 16 due to the controversy over the nomination.
